This battle isn’t going too well for Alex. Things get increasingly gory here, with the pages just splashed with blood and grue. Aside from Bill Finney’s colorful language, it’s probably this sequence that would make the first issue a hard sell for kids. Technically, I mean. In actual fact, in my experience kids go wild for the blood-drenched violence!
A nice addition by Jon Rector here is the 3 panels with the teeth flying out. As far as I can remember, that wasn’t in the script, so it was brought to the page by him. In our working relationship I tried to encourage this kind of collaboration, where my script was a guideline for what needed to be included, but if Jon had additional ideas for stuff that could make the page pop visually, he was welcome to bring it up.
