The Standard #6 – Page 20 a
The Standard might not have been able to battle The Dawn into submission, but what he was able to do is outlast him. As we’ve been told, there was a ticking clock fast approaching zero on The Dawn’s lifespan, and it seems we have now reached it.
This here, for me, is one of the most significant Gilbert Graham moments, one that says a lot about the type of person he is. After everything, after this monster murdered Alex Thomas in the most brutal of fashions, Gilbert still finds it in his heart to forgive him, still sees the pain and humanity at the core of The Dawn. This was never a revenge story, it was a story about getting justice. Gilbert Graham wanted to do right by Alex, but not at the expense of remaining the profoundly decent man he’s always been. For me, the ability to show mercy and kindness to someone he has every justifiable reason to hate is one of the most heroic things The Standard does in the whole series.
