The Standard

I adore that last panel.  With The Standard cast partially into the shade, it’s the closest Gilbert has come to looking sinister.  It’s a nice reminder of how dangerous someone with The Standard’s powers can be, and that he is in fact constantly holding back from real damage it’s perfectly within his physical capabilities to inflict.  It also suggests the toll inflicted on The Standard as it is suggested – though thankfully left off-panel! – that he was forced to use physical force to subdue the brainwashed children Piper set upon him.  I thought it seemed like a suitable trait for Gilbert that the absolute worst thing he could imagine would be harming a child in any way.
