The Standard #2 -Page 17

My favourite page of the chapter. Jonathan Rector absolutely knocked this page out of the park, packing it full of devastating emotion and superb “acting” by our two characters. The idea to do a reverse-negative silhouette on that last panel was all Jon’s idea, and it was a masterstroke. There’s no dialogue here, with the implications of just what kind of abuse young Alex was put through left to hang in the air. I knew I was asking a lot of Jon to convey that through his images, but he nailed it. Heartbreaking stuff.
Truly Heartbreaking !
This is a beautiful use of a silent page. Getting to the end of the prior page and realizing what had happened to Alex hurt, it brought tears to my eyes, and this page was a punch in the gut, it hammered home those emotions.
Thanks for the comments! Yes, this was a difficult page. I was conscious about trying to be respectful and not wanting to sensationalise Alex’s pain, instead portraying it as sensitively as we could. And I think Jon Rector did a stellar job in the execution.
